The MOOC is on: Free online courses commence 8th August 2016

MOOC Watch: Free online course explains big data.

Queensland University of Technology (QUT) is repeating four free courses on big data with the UK-based massive open online course (MOOC) provider FutureLearn.

Our first ever Massive Online Open Course (MOOC) on Big Data attracted more than 40-thousand enrolments for the four courses combined.  These courses are designed to help people in such fields as business, education, law or medicine. The courses taught people how to turn complex information into knowledge by adding big data analytics to their skill set.  The four courses will start again in August. CLICK HERE for more information about the first course and to register.

The four short courses, each requiring only four hours study over two weeks, are from the university’s Centre of Excellence for Mathematical and Statistical Frontiers.

The first course, From Data to Decisionsstarting on August 8 explores case studies of using the power of big data to reach decisions, and introduces the tools to store and manage large data sets.

The second, Statistical Inference and Machine Learning, starting on September 5, introduces software packages for big data analytics and helps  develop coding skills.

The third, Mathematical Modelling, starting on October 3, introduces three widely-used mathematical tools which can be applied to different data problems which would appear to have little in common, such as ranking websites, profiling leukaemia patients and taking selfies.

The fourth, Data Visualisation, starting on October 31, shows how through visualising data “we are able to draw conclusions from data that sometimes are not immediately obvious, and interact with the data in an entirely different way”.
