PhD Scholarships in Bayesian Learning for Decision Making in the Big Data Era

QUT is one of Australia’s most valuable contributors in research and provides quality-assured research solutions for industry, government, and the non-profit and community sectors.

The Statistical Science Discipline within the Mathematical Sciences School, Science and Engineering Faculty at Queensland University of Technology is offering up to three PhD scholarships to create new methodology for Bayesian statistics and translate this to real-world challenges in industry, environment and health.  An enthusiastic graduate with skills in statistical theory, methods and computation and an interest in applied research is sought

There is a living allowance of $26,288 per annum (tax free and indexed annually) for the duration of 3 years.

Project description

Enthusiastic graduates with skills in statistical theory, methods and computation and an interest in applied research are sought.  The successful applicants will commence their PhD upon acceptance and will contribute to a research project supported by an Australian Research Council (ARC) Australian Laureate Fellowship.

The student will have opportunities to acquire a wide range of research skills and develop advanced knowledge in the area of Statistics, with an emphasis on Bayesian Statistics. The research topic is highly innovative and it is expected that the student will adopt a ‘hands on’ approach to furthering our understanding of this field.

The successful applicant will work at QUT as part of the Bayesian Research & Applications Group (BRAG) www.bragqut.wordpress.com  and the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Mathematical and Statistical Frontiers (ACEMS) www.acems.org.au .

While it is not expected that the student will have full knowledge of all the systems and techniques required, it is important that the student be interested and motivated to acquire the necessary knowledge from the QUT staff involved with the project.

Eligibility

Candidates will be required to have completed a high quality Honours or Masters degree in Statistics or equivalent from a recognised institution.

Restricted to Domestic Research students (Australian citizen or permanent resident, or New Zealand citizen).
