MOOC Watch: New free online course explains big data.
Queensland University of Technology (QUT) is launching four free courses on big data with the UK-based massive open online course (MOOC) provider FutureLearn. The four short courses, each requiring only four hours study over two weeks, are from the university’s Centre of Excellence for Mathematical and Statistical Frontiers.
The fourth, Data Visualisation, starting on June 27, shows how through visualising data “we are able to draw conclusions from data that sometimes are not immediately obvious, and interact with the data in an entirely different way”.
The first course, From Data to Decisions, starting on April 4 explores case studies of using the power of big data to reach decisions, and introduces the tools to store and manage large data sets.
The second, Statistical Inference and Machine Learning, starting on May 2, introduces software packages for big data analytics and helps develop coding skills.
The third, Mathematical Modelling, starting on May 30, introduces three widely-used mathematical tools which can be applied to different data problems which would appear to have little in common, such as ranking websites, profiling leukaemia patients and taking selfies.
QUT has just joined FutureLearn, an increasingly popular MOOC platform for Australian universities which, until now. have worked more with the US providers, Coursera and edX. Online courses from QUT in digital media are on the way.
